Teachers at Fieldstone Middle School in North Rockland showed their support Friday for a beloved cafeteria employee who has always supported others over her decades of working at the school.
Superintendent Kris Felicello said staff gave up their prep and lunch time on Friday so that they could serve students and give the cafeteria staff a chance to support one of their own.
Sheila Furman, who has been a familiar and comforting face in the cafeteria for more than 20 years, was attending the funeral for a daughter of hers who died of cancer.
"Sheila would come to work with a smile on her face," Prinipal Natalie Santopietro said. "You would never know she was carrying this heavy burden with her."
Teachers said trading their lunch so that Furman could have the support she needed today was a no-brainer.
"It's lessons like these that I think are truly life learning experiences," Santopietro said.
