A 19-year-old has been arrested in Rockland County for stealing an Israeli flag.

Haverstraw police say 19-year-old Mary Cordero, of Spring Valley, is accused of stealing the flag in Pomona.

She's been charged with petit larceny as a hate crime.

Police Capt. John Gould told News 12 in police interviews with the suspect that it became clear the flag was stolen because of the owners' faith.

Police say Cordero was released on an appearance ticket due to legislative restrictions and will be due in court later.

Gould said this is the first hate crime he knows of in Haverstraw since the war broke out in Israel.

State crime statistics show 16 hate crimes were committed in Rockland County last year, which was double the amount from 2021.
