Two teenagers were hospitalized Monday afternoon after a shooting and stabbing took place near the Parkchester Subway Station in the Bronx, according to police.
The violence unfolded around 4:15 p.m. near Virginia Park, adjacent to the Parkchester subway station, sending shockwaves through a neighborhood where residents say families and young people regularly gather.
Surveillance video obtained from a nearby business captured the sound of a gunshot followed by a group of people running across Virginia Park moments later.
"You don't really think things like this would be happening in this area," said Joshua Wingel, who lives in the neighborhood.
Wingel said he was inside his apartment when the incident happened and immediately heard a loud noise from outside.
"I remember hearing a pop sound," Wingel said.
Police said officers responding to a 911 call for an assault discovered two people at Virginia Park. A 17-year-old male suffered a stab wound, while a 19-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the torso.
The shooting and stabbing both happened close to Parkchester station, an area neighbors say often sees heavy foot traffic throughout the day.
"This is a place people can come go and just chill, have fun, enjoy the weather. But we got the train station, so there be a lot of traffic that be coming through," Wingel said.
Hours after the violence broke out, investigators remained on scene gathering evidence. The only visible signs left behind at Virginia Park were gloves used by investigators as police continued processing the area.
One neighbor said the park is typically filled with young people.
"We got kids out here, they be out here all the time," Wingel said.
Police have not yet released details on what relationship, if any, existed between the two teenagers or what led up to the violence.
"Hope everyone is well, man," Wingel said.
Both victims were rushed to Jacobi Medical Center and are expected to survive.
No arrests have been made as of Monday evening.
