Last-minute shoppers were out and about on Wednesday ahead of an expected storm.

Natalia Tajonar, of White Plains, says she grabbed a few deals in the cold temperatures because she was worried about waiting too long.

"We won't be able to get the stuff that we want," says Tajonar.

The National Retail Federation says more than half of shoppers buy their gifts during the week leading up to Christmas and it usually peaks by Friday.

But the threat of bad weather is forcing people to wrap up earlier than usual.

The predicted increase in spending this holiday season compared to 2021 bodes well for the small business owner.

"People want to shop at small businesses. It's something special, something very unique about shopping at a specialty store because you get special items," says Lauren Morris, owner of Loola Doola Boutique.

Travel has also become a concern as well.

Airlines in and around New York City are already canceling flights. A rapid drop in temperature following a full day of rain could lead to icy conditions right before Christmas Eve.

Friday evening is expected to be one of the most congested days on the road, according to AAA.

Before the storm, AAA believed traffic would be manageable by 8 p.m. on Friday but now with the stormy weather, it's best to leave as late possible.
