The Town of Mamaroneck says a bridge project is going to cost even more now after the village reopened a structurally deficient bridge.

Work on Waverly Avenue Bridge in the Village was supposed to begin last month after the Department of Transportation deemed it deficient.

The town owns the bridge, which is in the village.

Town officials say the Village took down barricades and demanded the town pay the village $750,000 for police traffic control overtime.

While the town and village work out their financial disagreement, the town says a new inspection confirms a guardrail won't withstand a car's impact.

To protect people, the town says it may have to restrict traffic flow across the bridge. It says that will cost more because of the new inspection and implementation of any additional safety measures. The town says it didn't anticipate any of those costs because it didn't expect the village to reopen the bridge.

News 12 tried to contact the village offices, but it was closed for the day. The village hasn't returned calls for comment yet.
