A Ukrainian flag now hangs alongside the American flag high above Greenburgh Town Hall in a show of support for the war-torn country.
Ivan Makar, a resident of Hartsdale and principal of the Ukrainian Heritage School in Manhattan, led the efforts to get a Ukrainian flag flying above town hall.
"We cannot believe the photos that we're seeing, the coverage that we're seeing. This war has to stop and we're here to heighten support for the people in Ukraine," says Makar.
Tens of thousands have died in the war and 4.5 million people are now refugees.
"We're upset, we're angry, we're frustrated," says Makar.
This week members of the House Intelligence Committee, including Hudson Valley Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, were in Poland. They got a firsthand account of the situation from American troops, including West Point graduates.
"The sons and daughters produced by the Hudson Valley are right here on the frontlines of freedom," says Maloney. "It's an honor to see them in action and you should be very proud of them."
Maloney said the U.S. will continue to support its NATO allies, including Poland and stands in solidarity with Ukraine. President Joe Biden also announced an additional $800 million in military assistance for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian flag will fly outside the town hall for the next month.
