Officials at Summit School in West Nyack have confirmed that students and staff were exposed to a rabid cat on the premises.

The school had taken in three kittens from the Four Legs Good Animal Shelter, all of which were deemed medically fit for fostering.

One of the kittens fell ill and, despite efforts at an animal hospital, did not survive. Subsequent tests confirmed the cat was rabid. The remaining two kittens were promptly returned to the animal shelter.

The school has not disclosed the number of students and staff requiring rabies shots, but they have been collaborating closely with the Rockland County Health Department to address the situation.
