A Mount Vernon police sergeant faces a federal indictment for allegedly violating the constitutional rights of an individual.
The indictment against 44-year-old Mario Stewart was announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office. It stems from an incident in March 2019.
Authorities say the victim was experiencing a mental health crisis when Stewart and six other officers responded.
Stewart allegedly used a Taser on the person seven times while he was restrained in handcuffs and a restraint bag.
The person was injured, but the severity of the injuries was not immediately known.
Stewart faces a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.
In a statement, the city says the conduct was abhorrent and erodes the public's trust in the hardworking men and women of the police department.
The city says it remains committed to cooperating with the Justice Department's investigation into the department.
