Croton-on-Hudson officials are warning people to either not go into the Croton River or exercise extreme caution next week.

In a Facebook post, officials say that water levels are expected to rise in the river because of inspections being performed at the New Croton Dam.

The New York City DEP needs to draw down water levels, and all that water is going to go to the river. They say release from the reservoir will increase from the current 5.5 million gallons a day (MGD) and may be as high as 405 MGD, significantly increasing the flow of the river.

They say activities like as wade fishing and kayaking are discouraged since it will be unsafe.

As a precaution, Silver Lake Park, Mayo's Landing, Black Rock Park and Echo Canoe Launch will be closed on Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 to assess any potential impacts from this significant increase in river flow.

DEP will initiate the increased release starting on or about Sept. 6 and continue until approximately Sept. 27.
