A family from Nanuet is still reeling from a recent smash-and-grab robbery at its jewelry store in the Bronx.
Surveillance footage from April 29 shows two men at 3:56 p.m. smashing the store window of Grand Jewelers Corp. with a sledgehammer before escaping with about $150,000 worth of valuables.
Marjory Amoros, of Grand Jewelers Corp., says the thieves made off with men's rings, trays of bracelets and a whole tray of diamonds. Amoros says the thieves took more than just valuables, they also took away her sense of security and peace of mind.
"To be honest, the first three days we just didn't work," says Amoros. "We still have a lot of fear, if they're going to come back…and do something more than a smash and grab."
Peter Stalter, of Grand Jewelers Corp., says people don't realize that a lot of small businesses run on credit.
"You might get that Miami Cuban chain that's $15,000…when it sells, you pay back the wholesaler, and then you make a small percentage on it. And when something like that is stolen, you still need to pay the creditor," he said.
Both Amoros and Stalter are now weighing their options on whether to give up the business and find another place in a different area.
"Even though it's your livelihood, you put your blood, sweat and tears into it," says Stalter. "At what point does it no longer become about that and about worrying about coming home at night."
