A family member of the victim who was shot in New Rochelle across the street from Monroe College is expressing sadness and concern over gun violence.
Jesse Van Lew is a staunch anti-gun activist. His 22-year-old cousin was shot four times Tuesday.
"Were trying to stay strong and sane. You know? Like why? What do we do?" says Van Lew. "You go to sleep at night hoping that your kids when they go out, they're OK. Knowing that you got idiots riding around here with guns that will try and shoot you in the daytime. That's the problem."
David Dimond, the vice president of Monroe College, says 911 was immediately called after staff members heard the gunshots outside.
Security guards from the college ran outside, took off their coats and made it into a makeshift tourniquet to save the victim's life.
"Our two security staff did whatever they could do, covered with blood frankly, to help this man who was obviously frightened, in pain, writhing in the floor," says Dimond.
Van Lew says the shooting has left his family shaken.
"Emotions running wild, you don't know the injuries sustained until you get to the hospital," says Van Lew. "My cousin called me to tell me, and I had to check my messages again and like...you serious?"
New Rochelle police say the victim was the intended target, but the family has no idea why that would be.
