Residents in a small Orange County community reached out to News 12 Thursday upset that their local post office was shut down without much notice.
Westrookville residents say they received a letter from their post office Wednesday saying the location on State Route 209 would be shut down as of Thursday.
The United States Postal Service confirms the closure but wouldn’t say why.
"We apologize for the short notice and look forward to meeting the needs of the community," said Postmaster James Burns.
Assemblyman Karl Brabenec said the contract with USPS at that location requires 60 days' notice to the public.
“People get their medications delivered here, they have important documents here - and just to do this to residents, without even offering home delivery, is absolutely outrageous,” said Brabenec.
Westbrookville residents and customers with post office boxes are being routed to the nearest post office 3 miles away in Otisville.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Postal Service announced widespread consolidation plans to create "regional sorting and delivery centers," changing the way mail is delivered at 15 locations in Orange and Dutchess counties beginning September 2023.
