Westchester County officials are urging residents to be ready for Saturday's snowstorm.

They held a news conference Friday evening to inform residents about what to expect and how to prepare.

The forecast for Saturday's snowstorm is constantly changing but the advice from the county's Department of Emergency Services is steady.

Officials urged residents to use caution when driving on the roadways. They advise motorists to leave plenty of time to get to their destinations because there is a very good chance they might face a detour or a closure.

The county is ready to close down roads like the Bronx River Parkway and the Sprain Brook Parkway should conditions on those roads get too dangerous. They remind motorists that those parkways have the potential to flood.

Officials also advised motorists not to drive over downed wires but to turn around.

Residents are also encouraged to make sure they have emergency supplies charged and ready to go. They advise residents to check their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, put water in the car and make sure generators are outside. They ask that residents also check on any neighbors who may live alone or are elderly.

"Many people have not been involved in this weather for a couple of years. It is two different things happening. One is that it's snow and if it starts to rain and slushy, that wintery mix that usually means there is ice under that as well, so there's a lot of potential for accidents to happen," said Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins.
