Westchester County Executive Andy Spano is not mincing any words about how he feels regarding the future of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.

In 2013, the current license on the nuclear power plants in Buchanan runs out. But Entergy, which owns the plant, has already asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to allow it to continue running for another 20 years. Spano says he is not satisfied with the NRC?s criteria for renewal. He asked the NRC to go beyond its 1991 requirement, especially in light of 9/11. Spano wants the agency to consider environmental, safety, security and other factors in its re-licensing review. Entergy spokesman Jim Steets says the NRC's criteria are focused. Steets says Entergy has invested millions of dollars and done extensive security reviews since 9/11. However, Spano says he will meet with the Congressional delegation, hoping it will be able to change what he considers outdated regulations for re-licensing nuclear plants. There is time since the review process can take as long as two years.
