New equipment being installed along parts of the Bronx River Parkway is Westchester County's latest attempt to protect lives during severe flooding.

Westchester's Public Works and Parks Departments are testing a pilot program at five flood-prone entrances along the parkway.

The initiative would allow county officials to lower metal arms to block off cars from getting onto the parkway in case of flooding. Currently, many of the entrances are blocked off by smaller signs or cones during storms and many drivers disregard these blockades and put themselves at risk.

Not only is that dangerous for drivers but it also drains resources when first responders have to perform rescues.

Two are being placed southbound at Scarsdale Road in Yonkers, one southbound at Bronx River Road in Yonkers, one southbound at Wakefield Avenue in Yonkers and one northbound at Paxton Avenue in Bronxville.

The county will assess the program and determine whether it wants to expand to more intersections across the parkway.
