A Woodbridge man is in critical condition after police say he was struck in the head with a hammer by his stepson on Saturday.
Woodbridge police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating the assault, which took place on Saturday. Police responded to a home on Sherry Street for reports of a man who was unconscious after suffering "blunt force trauma to the head," the prosecutor said in a statement. When they arrived at the location, officers found the victim, who was identified as a 48-year-old man.
Following a preliminary investigation, investigators determined that the victim had been struck in the head several times with a hammer by his stepson, identified as Ronald Javier Polanco-Barrera, 22, of Woodbridge. Polanco-Barrera was arrested and is facing multiple charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.
The victim was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where police say he is currently listed in critical condition.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the assault and are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Penna of the Woodbridge Police Department at 732-634-7700 ext. 7326 or Detective Morillo of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at 732-745-8843.
