Employees of the Conserve Construction Company that burned to the ground in Suffern Thursday night spent Friday rummaging through the rubble and contemplating their next move.

Workers on scene tried to salvage what they could, carrying out file cabinets and stacks of paperwork. The company employs around 50 people, and it is still unknown how many of them will be out of work.

"A lot of these employees shopped, came to lunch in our town, and now they're going to be relocated somewhere [else]," says Aurelius Licata, of the Suffern Chamber of Commerce. "So it's an opportunity that we've lost."

Licata adds, however, that the owners of the construction company are working to find a temporary space for storage until they rebuild.

"The quicker they get in business, the better for us that they're back in our community," Licata says.

The damage to the 30,000-square foot building that was ravaged by the three-alarm fire is estimated at more than $1 million. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
