A wrong-way crash on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle left a man dead early Saturday morning.

Police say the driver of a Toyota Prius mistakenly turned the wrong way off Webster Avenue, heading southbound into oncoming northbound traffic. The impact with a Cadillac Escalade was severe. The Prius driver — a man in his 30s — received CPR at the scene but later died at Westchester Medical Center. The three people inside the Escalade suffered only minor injuries.

Neighbors say the confusing Webster Avenue entrance has been a problem for years.

“It’s so unsafe…accidents waiting to happen,” said Tina S. of New Rochelle, pointing to multiple ramps and unclear signage. She believes flashing warnings are needed.

Investigators say a county patrol officer discovered the wreckage moments after it happened. Northbound lanes on the Hutchinson River Parkway were closed for more than six hours as detectives worked to determine how the driver entered the highway the wrong way.
