One person is in critical but stable condition following a wrong-way crash on I-95 in the Village of Mamaroneck early Friday morning, New York State Police said.
The incident occurred on the northbound lanes near Exit 19 when crews received a report of a vehicle traveling southbound against traffic. Shortly after, the car, driven by 38-year-old Walter Perez-Menchu, crashed head-on into a Freightliner tractor-trailer.
Perez-Menchu was trapped in his vehicle and suffered serious injuries, including trauma to his arms, legs, and head. Emergency crews extricated him from the wreckage, and he was transported to Westchester Medical Center, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
The tractor-trailer driver, 33-year-old Charles Adams Evers, was uninjured and showed no signs of impairment. Evers voluntarily submitted to standardized field sobriety tests, which confirmed he was sober at the time of the crash.
The investigation into the cause of the wrong-way driving is ongoing.
