Major renovations are coming to the Nepperhan Community Center in Yonkers, officials have announced.

The original site was founded in 1942 in Runyon Heights. It was later moved to 342 Warburton Ave. in 1982. The new, revitalized community center will stay at its Warburton location.

Nepperhan Community Center has been a staple to the community for decades, offering programs, classes and a space for the community and youth to gather.

The renovations will include a commercial kitchen, internet, televisions and workout equipment.

The property's basement will also be renovated, doubling the square footage.

Those who frequent the site say they're excited to see the landmark stay in the community.

"I can't think of any other community centers in this area, vicinity, where local, community people go. So, I think it's great to continue to have it here and not tear it down," said Yonkers community member Stephanie Seabrook.

Mayor Mike Spano also announced that there are plans to designate the property as parkland, so it will be protected for future generations to come.

The Parks Department says it is actively looking for spaces to host groups and community members while construction takes place.

Spano expects to cut the ribbon on the new facility by 2027.
