Rockland County made history on Thursday awarding its first-ever H.E.R.R.O. scholarships.
Nyack Fire Department volunteer Aidan Carton and Nanuet EMS volunteer Dylan Habif are among the county's first H.E.R.R.O. scholarship recipients.
The Higher Education Recruitment & Retention Opportunities, or H.E.R.R.O., is a newly launched college tuition assistance program for volunteer firefighters and emergency responders. Each applicant must already be an active volunteer for at least a year.
The program is an effort to remove another barrier and make high education more accessible.
