A Beacon man has pled guilty to attempted assault in a violent 2023 midday attack in Poughkeepsie that was caught on camera and caused neighbors and police to respond with firearms drawn.

According to the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office, Rakim Paulin struck a victim during the incident last August with his vehicle at approximately 46 miles an hour, causing the person to fly into the air and land on the hood. Prosecutors say he continued to strike the victim once on the ground.

Paulin, who was arrested with a second suspect, was indicted for attempted murder and remanded to Dutchess County Jail. He was later released on $1,350 bail due to a legal technicality and subsequently arrested last July for possessing cocaine and fentanyl.

Paulin has pled guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance in that case.

His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 22. Prosecutors say Paulin will serve an agreed-upon sentence of nine years in prison and five years post release supervision for the attempted assault, along with 10 years in prison and three years post release supervision for the narcotics case.
