The father of a Bridgeport man who was fatally shot is getting the word out about his nonprofit organization "Fathers Helping Fathers."

Charles Nixon says he tours the state to meet with parents to teach them how to be more engaged in the lives of their children.

His son, 21-year-old Nyair Nixon, was fatally shot in Bridgeport in 2020.

It's a blow that you don't wish on your worst enemy. It's something that you've got to fight every day to come back from. If not, you can go into a deep hole and become bitter and you can make a bad situation worse. So God put it on my heart to start something called 'Father's Helping Fathers' because there are not too many organizations out there that cater to fathers. I thank God for giving me the strength to take one step at a time to deal with this thing day by day," Nixon told News 12 on Sunday.

Nixon says no parent is perfect but it's important for one to do their best to play an important role in the lives of their kids.
