More cats could still be inside a West Islip home after 80 were already rescued during an operation into alleged animal hoarding led by the Suffolk County SPCA on Tuesday.
Investigators said they received a tip that multiple animals were not being properly cared for at 1124 Patricia Ave.
Officials checked in on the home and found what they described as awful conditions inside, including strong odors of urine, feces on the ground and injured cats. The homeowner had been using a trailer structure on the property for additional space, officials said.
The Suffolk County SPCA is leading the investigation, alongside other rescue groups, including Save A Stray and Last Hope Animal Rescue, to help remove the cats from the home.
According to the SPCA, the homeowner had been breeding Maine Coon cats for the last 20 years. A website linked to the home's address was listing cats for sale for thousands of dollars each. That website appears to have gone offline, but was active as recently as yesterday.
Veterinarians are looking at each of the rescued cats, which will then go up for adoption.
