With Independence Day just around the corner, millions of Americans are gearing up for travel, and the roads and airports are expected to be packed.

According to AAA, a record 70.9 million travelers will venture at least 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday travel period, which includes the entire week of July 4, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This represents a 5% increase from last year.

The travel experts anticipate a surge in air travel, with 5.74 million Americans expected to fly to their destinations, marking a 7% increase from last year. Travelers are advised to arrive at the airport early to avoid potential delays.

For those hitting the road, expect plenty of company. AAA projects 60.6 million people will be traveling by car, a 2.8 million increase from last year. The worst traffic is anticipated on Saturday and Sunday, so drivers are urged to hit the road as early as possible, preferably before noon.

One silver lining for drivers: Gas prices are lower compared to last year.

However, travelers should remember that law enforcement will be out in full force over the next few days, cracking down on impaired driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations.
