DEC crews had to help clean up an Orange County rest area that had to close early yesterday after a potentially dangerous acid spill was called in to police.
The spill was reported sometime before 8:30 a.m. when a driver noticed a substance that was bubbling on the side of the road.
Hazmat crews were called to the scene and determined that the 50-gallon spill began in the rest stop at Exit 4 on the eastbound side of I-84, and then spilled down the ramp onto the highway.
Part of the highway, and the rest stop, had to be closed for several hours for cleanup. DEC officials say the type of acid spilled is not harmful to people.
