A portion of the apartments at a new affordable housing complex in Longwood are being set aside for formerly homeless families.
The complex, Banana Kelly Place, has 58 units, 18 of which are allotted for the homeless families. The families are being given Section 8 vouchers.
"It's so hard. Rent in New York City is so expensive," says Charease Brown, who recently moved into the complex. Brown adds that she can't believe how affordable the rent is in a building with so many amenities, such as a child care facility on the ground floor.
Also, a jungle gym occupies a space behind the building that was abandoned for more than 20 years.
