An Afghan woman with ties to Westchester County has safely escaped her country, according to her family.

Days after being evacuated from Kabul airport with thousands of other Afghans who were desperately looking to escape Taliban control, 24-year-old Freshta Nazari remains safe at a U.S. Army base in Germany.

"Freshta is alive because of those brave marines," said her cousin, Ossining resident Sofia Bator. Bator spent days pleading with local and state officials to help get Nazari out of harm's way.

Bator spoke to Nazari on Tuesday.

"She said that they're very good to everybody, they take care of people, They have three times a meal. They have a doctor and nurse on the camp," Bator told News 12.

According to Bator, Nazari was told she'll stay in Germany no more than 10 days. Where she will go after that is still unclear.

"She said they're going to take them to a Virginia camp. I don't know if she's going to go there or she going to come to new jersey. I'm not sure," Bator said.

Nazari escaped the turmoil and the Taliban in her country but is now worried about the elderly parents she left behind.

"I am here now safe, but my heart and my mind is with them," Bator said Nazari told her.

Bator said her cousin has not been given a coronavirus vaccine at the refugee camp in Germany. The expectant mother said when Nazari eventually makes it to Westchester, that is one of the first things she'll have her do.
