State police say the New York state Attorney General’s Office is investigating Wednesday's police-involved shooting of a wanted suspect in Woodbury.
They say the suspect, Ali Ali, was wanted by the NYPD for multiple violent crimes, including a homicide at a Brooklyn laundromat Sept. 16, and was spotted approaching Exit 16 in Harriman on the Thruway Wednesday in a stolen 2021 Chevrolet Equinox, at approximately 5:35 a.m. Ali allegedly refused to stop, instead causing a fiery crash into a tractor-trailer, and took off into the woods.
Authorities quickly began an intense search for Ali and zeroed in on his location when Ali was captured on a trail camera in Highland Mills around12:30. He was located in a wooded area of Trout Brook Road around 1:47 p.m.
Police say Ali was armed with a knife and was ordered multiple times to drop the weapon and surrender but failed to comply. Authorities say he was Tased twice but got up and charged at troopers when he was fatally shot.
The manhunt put several Monroe-Woodbury schools on lockout and delayed dismissal for roughly an hour. Nearby residents were told at the time that Ali could be armed and dangerous and to shelter in place.
State police say they are continuing to investigate the shooting.
