The arrival of a group of migrants expected at an Orange County hotel has been delayed, News 12 has learned.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams’s team said, "We're discussing legal and safety concerns with our state partners, and while we have paused tonight, our plans have not changed.”
There were several residents at the Crossroads Hotel protesting the plan Wednesday night.
County Legislator Genesis Ramos says some of the protesters were screaming obscenities.
"There have been folks driving by recording us, screaming from our cars to go back to our country, go back to where we came from, sticking up their middle finger. So, there's been all kinds of hate spewed in just these past few hours that we've been standing here,” Ramos says.
Police were on the scene Wednesday to make sure things didn’t escalate.
Ramos says the reaction from some residents has her concerned for the safety of the migrants and their integration into the community once they do arrive.
"We are very concerned about their safety. That is actually on the top of our list, and that is why we've been frantically connecting with as many people as possible because we understand that there are people making some serious threats. We've personally seen it. I've taken screenshots. One person went as far to say on Facebook that he's ‘locked and loaded,’ I mean this is on the county executive’s post by the way, so this is the kind of messaging that's out in the community,” she says.
Rockland County Executive Steve Neuhaus, other Hudson Valley county executives, Adams and Gov. Hochul are expected to have a phone call in the next 24 hours to go over the situation and weigh their options.
