With a margin of only four percentage points separating them, Republican Greg Ball declared victory over his Democratic opponent Mike Kaplowitz in the race for the 40th state Senate District.
Ball had 52 percent of the vote, compared to Kaplowitz's 48, when he made the announcement just after midnight.
Ball said that his campaign finally decided there was no way he could lose, and immediately started to look forward to a possible Republican majority in the Senate.
"It looks like it's going to be slim, which means as an independent voice in that New York State Senate, that my voice will be extremely effective and extremely powerful," Ball said.
