A Tremont business owner is searching for answers after a car crashed into his storefront and drove away, leaving behind several thousands of dollars' worth of damages.
Germain Tandoh, the owner and CEO of the shipping service center Global Mails, says he arrived to work Wednesday morning only to discover damages to his building on East Tremont Avenue.
"When I come to open the shop, I come in here, I saw the store, the front of the store damaged," Tandoh recalls. "That's when I realized maybe something happened, so I called the police."
Surveillance video shows a red SUV drive up the sidewalk and crash into his store around 5 a.m. Wednesday. The vehicle then drives away down East Tremont Avenue.
Tandoh says what he found even more shocking was that police stopped the same red SUV minutes before the crash.
"I'm trying to understand the reason why that car was allowed to move. We don't know what conversation went on between the police and the driver," he says.
While Tandoh waits for police to complete their investigation, he says he was left with more than $10,000 worth of damages.
"It came from my own pocket. I have to do what I have to do," Tandoh says.
Global Mails is the only UPS shipping center in the neighborhood.
"Most of the customers depend on us. We have pharmacy shops dropping off medications for patients and we have a lot of customers picking up packages from here," Tandoh says.
Tandoh says while it is disappointing, he is glad no one was hurt.
"I'm just praying that the right thing will be done, because he or she, to have done this, we don't know what could have happened if someone was working," Tandoh adds.
