The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched its first annual contact lens safety campaign in an effort to raise awareness about eye care.
The CDC hopes to teach contact lens-users the proper preventative care to avoid viruses or bacteria.
Ophthalmologist Dr. Korik, of the Bronx Eye Associates, says the most common contact lens infection is called keratitis.
In order to avoid serious damage to the eye, ophthalmologists recommend contact lens-users take out lenses before bed, wash hands frequently, never reuse contact lens solutions, and don't use water to clean lenses.
The CDC says its target audience is 18- to 22-year-old contact lens-users who are at the most risk.
Most eye infections can be treated by doctors, but more serious infections can lead to blindness or the need for a cornea transplant.
