New affordable apartments are coming to Yonkers for seniors.
Construction is underway for over 100 affordable apartments for seniors at 345 McLean Ave. "We can try to help seniors who have spent their lives in Yonkers, they want to downsize and give them an opportunity to stay right here in their city," says John Rubbo, Yonkers City Council Majority Leader.
Rubbo says the plan includes 53 parking spaces, a computer space, library and outdoor space.
Advocates say with the big need for more affordable housing, they believe this will benefit the city. "I do expect that once the lists opens and units become available, people are going to be waiting with bated breath for the opportunity to move into one of these newly built units," says Kisha Skipper, President of NAACP Yonkers Branch.
Some say they're happy there will be more affordable housing options for seniors. But, some are little concerned about more traffic on McLean Avenue. "I think it's great as long as they do something about the traffic but if it's for seniors, I think it's very important," says Yonkers resident John Turturiello. "It's a very crowded area. Traffic is already semi-horrible already," says Yonkers resident Emmett Murphy.
Housing advocates like Kisha Skipper say the work shouldn't stop here. They're now hoping that more affordable units for seniors and youths will be built in other areas of Yonkers.
"The housing crisis is not limited to the City of Yonkers or the County of Westchester," says Skipper. "Our most vulnerable communities, our seniors and our youth, need to always be a priority."
The project will be completed in 2027.
