Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: Debt collectors can contact people via social media
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced that debt collectors will now be able to contact you on social media.
It said that the debt collectors must following certain rules and should tell you how to opt out of social media communications.
The bureau said that a debt collector can only communicate with people on social media platforms about a debt if the message is private - the message cannot be seen by friends, contacts or followers.
It said the debt collector must identify themselves if they are sending a private message or requesting to add the person as a friend or contact.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says a debt collector must give people a way to opt out of receiving further communication.
