Cuban Americans in Westchester rallied in support of the Cuban people as anti-government protests continue in the communist-led country.

The group marched from Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow Friday, two villages with large Cuban populations that are calling for more support for the Cuban people.

Thousands of Cubans have taken part in the country's largest demonstrations since the 1990s over a lack of basic human rights - including food, energy, and freedom of speech.

People in Westchester with family in Cuba hope to raise more awareness about the real issues plaguing the island-nation.

"They don't know where Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow are, but there's a group of Cubans supporting them, cheering them on," said Leslie Blanco-Ishoo, Cuba Libre organizer.

Dalia Valdes is a native Cuban who moved here when she was five years old -- she says life in Cuba in the 1960s was tough.

"The milk was rationed, the meat was rationed, everything was rationed. You had to stand on line to get a bar of soap," she said.

But what she sees back home is even worse.

"These are people with no food, no rights to speak up if they disagree. They're jailed," said Blanco-Ishoo.

Earlier in the week, President Joe Biden sanctioned several top Cuban military and political leaders for suppressing peaceful protests.
