A Spring Valley man was arrested Thursday after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase with his 2-year-old son in the back seat.
Police say 27-year-old Ricardo Gauvin and his son's mother were fighting at his home when he slashed her face with a knife, stormed out, picked up his son from a babysitter and made threatening phone calls.
According to investigators, Gauvin first said he was going to kill the child and himself, and in a later phone call said he had killed his son.
"There were certain points where we heard the child in the background, but he continued to make threats against himself and the child," says Sgt. Peter Russell, of the Spring Valley Police Department.
Gauvin then allegedly led police on a chase through Clarkstown, Ramapo and Spring Valley. At one point, police say Gauvin rammed his white SUV into three police cruisers. The pursuit ended when Gauvin pulled over in front of the Spring Valley Police Department headquarters.
Gauvin is being held without bail. He is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. The child, who was not harmed, was returned to his mother.
The officers who were in the police cruisers that were rammed were treated for minor injuries.
