State police: Dangerous pursuit in Newburgh called off before fatal crash

Police attempted to stop a pick-up truck after observing traffic violations. The driver did not stop, and troopers began a pursuit that continued onto Route 32 and then to I-84 westbound.

State police say one man was killed in an early morning accident.
It began around 3:30 a.m. Friday on Route 9W in the Town of Newburgh.
Police attempted to stop a pick-up truck after observing traffic violations. The driver did not stop, and troopers began a pursuit that continued onto Route 32 and then to I-84 westbound.
The pursuit stopped because the pick-up was driving dangerously fast. Police later discovered the vehicle had crashed.
It was determined it had collided with a tractor without a trailer, lost control and crashed. A passenger, 25-year-old Phelipe Figueroa of Otisville was killed.
The driver 25-year-old Liam McNichol of Port Jervis suffered minor injuries. Charges against him are pending.
