The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development seized documents Wednesday from Spring Valley's Section 8 department.

Village attorney Bruce Levine, deputy village attorney Ryan Karban and Deputy Mayor Noramie Jasmin refused to talk to News 12 Hudson Valley about the case Thursday.

However, Village Trustee Demeza Delhomme said he was there when investigators seized the documents. "They took all the files from Section 8. I don't think it's right for the mayor to take the fifth nor the deputy mayor to take the fifth."

HUD's Office of Inspector General asked the Rockland County DA to help during the investigation, but would not confirm or deny any allegations. HUD officials only said they investigate claims of public corruption or fraud by landlords and tenants.

Spring Valley is authorized through HUD to distribute vouchers to landlords and tenants. Applicants are screened at the local Section 8 office. Those who are deemed eligible based on their salary pay only 30 percent of their gross income for rent, while HUD pays the rest.

Spring Valley Mayor George Daren later released a statement that reads: "I have no idea what is being investigated but we are open like a book and we will provide anything asked by investigators. The village will certainly try to correct any problem found."
