A donation drive in Mount Kisco raised money for the victims of a serious bus crash that occurred this week in New Castle.
Nine people were injured on Wednesday afternoon when police say an unlicensed 16-year-old driver lost control around a curve and crashed head-on into a Yorktown school bus.
The nine victims are being treated for their injuries at Westchester Medical Center, according to authorities.
The fundraising event at Mimi’s Coffee House was organized by Kaitlynn Hurtado Rodriguez, whose husband’s teenage cousin is one of the hospitalized victims.
Mount Kisco trustee Karina Patino encouraged the community on Facebook to contribute items like eggs, milk, nonperishable snacks and water bottles. She also suggested donating gift cards for Panera Bread because the hospital where the victims are being treated contains the restaurant.
Rodriguez says they hope the event garners $100,000 to help the families cover medical expenses. She also says they plan to hold more fundraisers in the future.
“People don’t know us, so it’s really sweet to see strangers get together to give us love and support,” she said.
