A trucker managed to escape injury Tuesday after a train slammed into his stalled dump truck at a railroad crossing at the intersection of Short Clove Road and Route 9W.
Police say the driver of the asphalt-filled truck heard the train coming, got out and tried to signal the conductor. But he was too late. The train plowed into the back of his truck and a nearby car. The car's driver also escaped uninjured.
Residents say the intersection, which is in a heavily traveled area and has no traffic signal, has a history of dangerous incidents. To alleviate the problem, the Department of Transportation is moving forward with a $20 million project to create two bridges for drivers to get in and out of Haverstraw. The construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2008.
In the meantime, the DOT and the Haverstraw police are investigating to determine if any tickets should be issued.
