A young family with ties to Orange County is being remembered after a deadly crash in North Carolina.
Loved ones say Anastasia Zervakis, her 7-year-old daughter Gisele and Gisele’s father, Eddie Beniquez, were killed Saturday in a head-on crash on I-95 in Robeson County. Police say another driver was traveling the wrong way and collided with their vehicle, which caught fire.
As News 12 previously reported, the family had been traveling from Florida to visit Zervakis’ mother, Tiffany, in the Middletown area — where they had previously lived.
“The neighborhood… the community is heartbroken for everyone,” said Teresa Colon, a longtime family friend.
Colon says the loss has been especially devastating for Zervakis’ mother, who lost her only daughter and only granddaughter.
“Tasia is her only daughter and her world. That was her first granddaughter, only granddaughter. She’s not in a good place,” Colon said.
News 12 also spoke with Beniquez’s grandmother in New York City by phone. She described him as a devoted father and hardworking man.
“A sweetheart of a guy… a hard worker. Very dedicated to his family. Very dedicated to the little girl… they did everything together,” said Lucy Ortiz.
Now, a family with roots in New York and Florida is left grieving and leaning on one another for support.
“The whole family is devastated… we’re taking it day by day,” Ortiz said.
Online fundraisers for the family have raised thousands of dollars in just a few days, as support continues to pour in from New York, Florida and North Carolina.
