A new national effort to reduce food waste is being highlighted at a facility in Rockland County.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and Congressman Mike Lawler visited the Rockland Green Composting Facility on Sunday to spotlight the “Feed It Onward” initiative.
Zeldin said the program aims to cut down on food waste in communities across the country.
“Rockland County can be looked to, in a way, as a pilot program or an example of that incredible leadership that so many other communities elsewhere around this country should be looking to have a vision for what to do with food waste.” says Zeldin.
Officials say the initiative encourages communities to find better ways to manage and repurpose food waste.
According to Lawler’s office, Americans waste more than 133 billion pounds of food every year.
