The FDNY says the fire broke out 12:12 a.m. Monday at 18 Jacobus Place in apartments 6E and 6D. The fire then spread to the attic.
Officials say four people were hurt, including three firefighters. Fire officials say the heat played a role in the firefighters' injuries. Another person was injured on scene but refused medical attention. They are all expected to be OK.
It took firefighters two hours to get the flames under control, as they rotated personnel to limit heat exposure.
Officials are working to figure out the cause of the fire.
The Red Cross says its team is providing emergency shelter assistance to 21 adults and eight children.
