Rockland residents who advocated to have a roadway dedicated to veterans cleaned up will see results beginning tomorrow.
Freedom Causeway is frequented by hundreds of people daily as they travel through Rockland County.
Congers resident John Errico isn’t pleased with its upkeep, saying in part, “When you come from New City to go to Congers, it looks like garbage.”
Another resident of Congers, John Muggeo, believes the overgrown weeds, broken fences and endless litter doesn’t serve the name any justice.
“It’s a Freedom Causeway dedicated to the men and women who fought for that freedom, they put flags up. Yet they don’t take care of the road,” says Muggeo. ”I mean that’s a disgrace for the men and women that fought for that flag.”
Both men have ties to the military with Muggeo being an Air Force veteran and Errico’s son currently serving in the Army.
The Congers men say they’ve asked state and local officials, along with Suez, to clean the area.
“Fix it up, start it tomorrow morning,” says Errico.
Their voices were heard and results are expected soon.
Suez issued a statement to News 12 saying they believe the Freedom Causeway is a wonderful tribute to our armed service members and they will begin their annual June effort to clear the brush starting June 23 and replace damaged fencing.
Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski was instrumental in helping to get results.
“It’s a source of pride for the community…it’s important that we make sure the aesthetics of our towns, our county, and our villages are up to date and are being kept up…certainly by individuals and their homes but also businesses and utilities,” says Zebrowski.
