Family and friends gathered in Middletown Saturday to mourn a 5-year-old girl who died after collapsing at school.
Those in attendance at the St. James Church of God and Christ remembered Deleshiana Wright as spunky and kind-hearted. Wright?s grandmother says the kindergartener was a lovable kid who enjoyed life to the fullest.
Wright was running with her classmates during field day activities at the Anna S. Kuhl Elementary School in Port Jervis Tuesday, when she suddenly collapsed. Teachers tried unsuccessfully to revive her with CPR and even a portable defibrillator. Temperatures reached into the 80s that day, leading some to wonder if the collapse was heat-related. It was later revealed that Wright also had asthma, but took her medication that morning.
Wright had been in foster care for the last three years, but her biological family says she was happy and adapting well. Wright?s foster family was too distraught to comment, but her biological mother says she wonders if the tragedy could have been avoided.
Preliminary autopsy reports were inconclusive. There is a continuing investigation into how exactly Wright died.
