Some Republican leaders are trying to persuade Westchester District Attorney Jeanine Pirro to abandon her bid for the U.S. Senate in favor of the state attorney general seat.

Many Republican leaders believe that Pirro can serve her party better running for attorney general. The say Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who is running for governor, are strong Democratic candidates who will draw a lot of voters. Many say Pirro as a moderate Republican could get crossover votes for attorney general, which would be unlikely for U.S. Senate.

The state Conservative Party leader Michael Long has made it clear to Pirro that she won't get that party line if she runs for U.S. Senate.
