Back in the 1970s, Wendy Hilliard became the first ever African American gymnast to represent the United States globally. She then turned that passion for the sport into a foundation that helps over 1,500 kids.
The Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation, based in Harlem, provides free and low-cost gymnastics to students, but they haven’t been able to use their space at the Harlem Armory since March.
After months of zoom classes, Andy Diaz, the owner of USC Gymnastics and Baseball Training Facility, stepped up to help.
“Us gymnasts kind of stick together and she reached out, she needed space and I obliged,” he told News 12.
Hilliard says she is proud of her nonprofit for still being able to help kids and stay true to their mission.
