Here are some stories making headlines across the Hudson Valley.
A Mount Vernon police sergeant is recovering today
after suffering injuries during an arrest on Monday. Police say the sergeant injured
his ribs and shoulder while tackling a suspect who was running while carrying a
gun. The sergeant is
expected to return to work after a short recovery.
A Spring Valley Buildings Department official pleaded
not guilty to multiple charges, in connection to a devastating nursing home
fire that killed two people back in March. Raymond Canario, 45, is accused of falsifying inspection
reports to the state years before the deadly fire at the Evergreen Court
facility. Canario was indicted by a grand jury on nine counts earlier this
week, in connection to that fire. He faces up to three years in prison. He is due back in court next month.
Numerous local leaders are
opposing the state's decision to close six prisons by next spring, including
the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill. All inmates will be transferred to other state
prisons or county jails. And all staff will be offered jobs for transfer, so there will be no layoffs.
The state says the plan will save about $142 million taxpayer dollars. Officials want the state to
reinvest this money saved into keeping correctional officers safe. Dutchess County Executive Marc
Molinaro says the governor's office gave him no advanced notice this was
happening.
