Health officials now say the Warwick elementary school student who tested positive for exposure to the tuberculosis (TB) germ does not have an active infection.

The Warwick Valley Central School Distinct had sent a letter to parents yesterday alerting them about the recent positive tuberculosis test out of an abundance of caution, even before the final test results were received today.

The district sent a second letter today to parents apologizing for possibly causing a health scare.

The state Health Department says there are 1,300 reported cases of tuberculosis in New York each year.

Signs of tuberculosis include a painful, wet cough that lasts more than three weeks, accompanied by weakness or fatigue, weight loss and fever. If left untreated, it can be fatal.
